Occupational Therapy (OT) at Bright Start is designed to help children build independence and succeed in daily life activities. Our occupational therapists support children who may face challenges with fine motor skills, self-care, sensory processing, or coordination.
These services are provided at no cost to eligible families and are carefully overseen by the Department of Education. Through individualized plans and family collaboration, we help children gain the confidence and abilities they need to participate fully at school and at home.

How do I refer my child for OT services?
If you are concerned about your child’s ability to hold a pencil, dress themselves, use utensils, or regulate their emotions and behaviors, you can request an evaluation through your local school district’s Special Education Department.
They will guide you through:
Explaining your concerns.
Receiving forms and completing paperwork.
Selecting an approved evaluation provider.
Scheduling the evaluation process.
What happens during the evaluation process?
OT evaluations are engaging and playful. They include:
Fine motor tasks such as drawing, cutting, or stacking blocks.
Sensory activities to observe how a child responds to different environments.
Parent input about everyday strengths and challenges.
Once the evaluation is complete, families will receive feedback along with a written report that goes to the school district. Based on this, a meeting will be scheduled to discuss eligibility and recommended services.
What can I expect at a CPSE meeting?
The Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) meeting will include:
Parents/guardians
CPSE/CSE chairperson
Evaluators
Occupational therapist
Teacher(s)
Service providers
County representative
If eligible, the team will create a plan for therapy sessions, focusing on improving daily living skills, school participation, and independence.
